Im the owner of WebCyclery. My passion for cycling began in 1991, after a college roommate (Noffer) got me to buy my first mountain bike. It was a Specialized Rockhopper Comp, Battleship Gray, with Deore LX. I beat the hell out of that thing for a year or so, and when it was time to buy a new bike, I decided to get a job at a bike shop so I could save some. I worked at Aero Schwinn in Boca Raton, Florida for a couple of years. Then I put myself through school working at Tecs Pro Shop in Tallahassee, Florida (If you ever see Tec, tell him I say Hi). I was the service manager until I graduated from Florida State University with a degree in French (ce qui maide beaucoup - not). I spent a couple of summers studying in Paris, which was really exciting for me because I got to see a lot of the Tour. With a diploma in my back pocket, I loaded a rental car with all my bikes and my faithful dog, Jeff (R.I.P.), and ended up in beautiful Bend, Oregon. Its a small town of about 65,000 avid outdoor enthusiasts. Were right on the edge of the High Desert and the Cascade Mountains, so weve got plenty to do for just about everyone. Weve got great mountain biking, road riding, paddling, climbing, skiing and snowboarding, etc., etc., etc. The place rocks! And unlike the rest of the Pacific Northwest, it doesnt rain all the time. Since were on the edge of a desert, its really dry and sunny. One of the only downsides to living in Bend is that everyone seems to be super fit. There are a ton of pro and former pro athletes that call Bend home, so it really puts people like me in their place. Some of our cycling residents include Chris Horner, Adam Craig, Carl Decker, Steve Larsen, April Lawyer, Chris Sheppard, Ryan Trebon, and a bunch more. Within a year of moving, WebCyclery was born. I was tired of seeing how the traditional mail order companies treated customers (and I heard plenty of complaints), and I decided that I could do it better by using the Internet. I couldnt really compete with the big boys on price (they sell some stuff cheaper than I can buy it), so I decided to specialize on the niches, hard to find stuff, and to offer the best damn customer service available, and I think we do a pretty good job of it. We also try to provide you with all the information that you need to make an informed decision. We only sell stuff that we like. Do we ride it all? Hell no, but we also dont have an endless supply of cash to constantly buy and ride all the new stuff we get in the shop. In May of 2000, I hired my brother (known as MeanTodd to you and me) to help me out. He worked with me in Boca Raton and at Tecs, and then was the head mechanic at the Great Bicycle Shop in Tallahassee for 5 years. Hes a good shit. He too has a passion for everything bike related. Whether hes riding Trials, road, BMX, a single speed, or a commuter, hes gonna have a smile on his face. Ive also hired my father, Double Clutchin Dickie G, to help me with marketing and he is also in charge of shipping. So now were a full-fledged family business. If you give us a call, odds are youll be speaking to one of us. Initially run out of my garage, WebCyclery quickly grew beyond my expectations. In 2000, we moved into 1,200 square feet of office, retail, and warehouse space in the Old Mill District of Bend, which allowed us to stock more inventory. We didnt really push the local thing, because our repair area was small and we were too busy with web stuff. Finally, in Feb of 2004, we were busting at the seems. We moved 2 doors down into the old Meridian Tandems/World Class Cycles/Home of Two Circles spot. Our space is now about 3,000 sq. feet. Weve opened the doors to the public so that we can extend our services to our local cycling community. In April of 2005 we hired Dave Cieslowski. Dave used to be the manager over at one of the local bike/ski shops. With Daves help, we decided to enter the Nordic Ski market. We launched WebSkis.com in September of 2005. Offering ski equipment keeps us even busier in the winter months. The nordic ski business has greatly improved our local business, which has made 2006 our best year ever! Rolling into 2007 weve now got 5 new employees! Wow, I own my very own bike and ski shop and have real employees - thats pretty cool.
